Registered Nurse (RN)
Registered Nurses (RNs) are generalist nurses who provide direct care to patients in various settings, such as hospitals, clinics, and long-term care facilities. They assess patients' health, administer medications, monitor patient progress, and coordinate with other healthcare professionals to create effective treatment plans. RNs often specialize in areas like pediatrics, oncology, or critical care, depending on their training and interests.
Nurse Practitioner (NP)
Nurse Practitioners (NPs) are advanced practice nurses who hold at least a master's degree and are trained to diagnose and treat medical conditions, often serving as primary care providers. They have more autonomy than RNs and can prescribe medications, order tests, and manage patient care independently in many states. NPs frequently work in family medicine, pediatrics, or women's health, offering preventive care and treatment.
Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM)
Certified Nurse Midwives (CNMs) specialize in women's health, particularly in pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum care. They provide prenatal care, support during labor and delivery, and postnatal support. CNMs often emphasize a holistic approach to childbirth, aiming for low-intervention births when possible. They also provide general reproductive health services, including gynecological exams and family planning counseling.
